I think people make life way more complicated that it is. It gets so frustrating how everyone on BYU campus is so obsessed with dating and marriage. Don’t get me wrong, I want to get married and I like dating. But it seems that is all everyone thinks and talks about. I think it’s hilarious how there are so many awkward moments on campus when someone is passing by that you used to date or that got your number but never called you. Just today a guy that I went out with a few times saw me and immediately turned in the other direction. How pathetic is that? Just because it doesn’t work out between someone doesn’t mean you can’t be friends or at least civil to each other. People need to lighten up a little and stop worrying so much about the opposite sex. When the time is right it will happen so stop making such a big deal about it. Get out there and make some friends, introduce yourself to someone you don’t know and see what happens. Stop being afraid they’re going to think you want to date them. There are so many people on campus who have the most awesome personalities and who would be such great friends. But people tend to worry so much about dating that they forget about friendship.

WATCO a universal health care system on the citizens of the United States?
ENTHYMEME: A universal healthcare system will benefit the citizens of the United States because even the poorest in the country will have their basic needs taken care of.
AUDIENCE: Independent voters who live in the U.S who are undecided on the elections and universal healthcare.

PRO’S
Every citizen would be covered under a national united health care system
Administrative costs could drastically be reduced
Current system is not working

CON’S
Income taxes would increase
Private insurance companies may be put out of the healthcare administrative business
Americans are worried it is just another route to socialism
Transitions process is questionable

Rhetorical analysis

Argument: The United states should implement a health care system because everyone deserves equal opportunity to receive good health care without having to worry about being able to afford it or not.
Audience: Republican voters in the U.S and American citizens reading the article.
Ethos: credible because the author talks in detail about the pro’s and con’s and she addresses both sides of the argument. There are also citations from other articles about the topic and the author gives sources for the reader to do their own research on the topic.
There is also some background information about universal healthcare systems and how they operate. This show’s that the author actually does know what she is talking about.
Pathos: Appeals to emotion in that the author includes some of the devastating situations that are happening in the U.S today because people cannot afford healthcare. It gives a sense of worry and stress that there are people whose needs are not being addressed because they can’t afford it.
Logos: Appeals to logic in the sense that if there are more positives than negatives in implementing a universal healthcare system, and the author gives examples of each, why wouldn’t people want it? It only makes sense that people would want to have all of their needs taken care of without having to worry about how expensive everything is.
Effective: A very effective article because it gives the reader something to think about. It gives a better understanding to what a universal healthcare system consists of and why it can benefit the American society.
Sufficient? Yes because it gives enough evidence that a universal healthcare system will have a positive effect on the environment and it includes sources.
Typical? Yes because of the presidential elections coming up there is a lot of debate on this topic. This topic could be a factor that persuades people which political party to vote for.
Accurate? Yes because it gives examples from both sides of the argument
Relevant? Yes because at this time of year it is a topic subject for debate because of the presidential elections.

One of the most amazing experiences I’ve ever been through was when I went to Brazil the summer before last. Everything about the country, the people, the food, the beaches are/is beautiful. I went with two of my sisters a brother and a cousin. We arrived in Rio de Janeiro on a bus from Sao Paulo at 11:00pm at night to a very rundown, dirty part of the city that was by an abandoned park. Between the five of us we had twelve pieces of luggage (big mistake) and we knew that if we so much as blinked they would get stolen. My brother Wayne took my sister Monica with him to go look for a hotel while my cousin Bill stayed with me and my sister Suzette. After what seemed like 2 hours they finally arrived telling us that they almost got robbed by a bunch of 14 year old kids. Every hotel was full because of a Soccer game going on so our only choice was to stay in this smelly, small, junky little Motel in the middle of nowhere. The toilet was just underneath the shower spout so when you took a shower the toilet did too. That way if you needed to use the bathroom while showering all you had to do was open the lid and Voila!!! Just underneath our room was a bar so we didn’t sleep at all because of all the drunk men singing and shouting as they watched the soccer games. The next night we wanted to learn how to dance “samba” so we were driving around trying to find a club. All of a sudden we saw like 20 girls dressed in nothing on every corner. Because I had never seen anything like it before it took me a while to realize that they were strippers. Some of them were Transvestis too. Needless to say we went straight back to the hotel and waited to go to the beach the next day to see what kind of fun adventures we would experience there.

Technique application

1- WATCO a universal health care system on the citizens of the United States?
Enthymeme: A universal health care program will improve the U.S health crisis because every citizen would be covered under a national united health care system.

2- WATCO implementing a universal health care system on the affordability of healthcare for the citizens of the U.S?
Enthymeme: Implementing a universal health care system will increase the chances of affordability for healthcare because administrative costs would be drastically reduced.

3- WATCO a universal health care system on taxes in the United States?
Enthymeme: Having a universal health care system in the United States would increase income taxes because Doctors, nurses and pharmaceutical companies need to be paid for their work.

4- WATCO a universal health care system on private insurance companies?
Enthymeme: A universal health care system would reduce private insurance companies because a universal health care system would cause these companies to be put out of the health care administrative business.

5- WATCO a universal health care program in the lives of American citizens?
Enthymeme: A universal health care system will benefit the lives of American citizens because basic health care should be an available human right to all Americans.

Rhetorical analysis

1- Argument: A universal health care plan in the U.S., although there are disadvantages, will help many people who can’t afford healthcare.
2- Audience: People who are politically oriented, who want to save money and who feel that American citizens have a right to universal healthy care.
3- Ethos: credible in that the article isn’t biased. It brings up both sides of the argument including the pros and cons of universal healthcare. It gives examples of other countries that have universal programs and how they have or have not been successful. The article also describes in detail what a universal healthcare program is and how it would impact the American society.
4- Pathos: appeals to emotion in that because of all the examples and details the article gives it causes the reader to feel that they deserve cheaper healthcare. The U.S is one of the only developed countries that does not have a universal healthcare system and the reader feels that it’s not fair. Also, the article causes the reader to think about all the people in the country who are on Mecicare/medicade and it makes them feel that they too should have that.
5- Logos: logical in a sense that if the country is one of the leading world powers why can’t it do more for the people. It only makes sense that people are getting sick of how expensive healthcare is and when comparing their situation to other countries it’s logical to think that we too should have universal healthcare.
6- Effective: the article was effective because it gives the reader something to think about and contemplate as to why universal healthcare would benefit them.

Last year, the Friday before General Conference, some friends came down from Alaska and we went to this club called Studio 600 for the huge General Conference dance they have every six months. We danced until around 1:30am and then everyone decided to go to Denneys in down town Salt Lake. We got there and had to wait for over 25 minutes until finally we sat down at a table and ordered our food. Right before everyone was finishing up I told my sister we needed to leave because we had to drive back to Provo. So we said good bye to everyone, paid and walked out. As we were approaching my sisters car I noticed a tall man about 6'5 leaning against the car smoking a cigar and three heavier set black women standing on the side of him. As I was getting near the car I wasn't sure if I should ask the man to get off the car or just get in and see what he would do. As I was walking past the women to get in the passenger seat I glanced at the man and then looked at the car. All of a sudden, out of nowhere, one of the lady's reached her arm back as far as she could and then swung it forward and slapped me as hard as she could. I was in such shock i didn't know what to say but as i was trying to come back to my senses she started yelling at me "You B--ch". Don't you be looking at my husband you Mo-Fo.. and then she started trying to beat me up but the ladys on the side of her and her husband held her back. I was so angry and every swear word in the book was flying through my brain but i didn't want to sound as stupid as she did so i yelled back " you are so insecure about yourself, i was not checking out your husband" and i got in the car and cried all the way home. I felt so helpless because I left crying but i knew if i tried to defend myself by hitting her she would've killed me. She was like three times my size. It's a great story to tell now that it's over.

RHETORICAL ANALYSIS

Rhetorical Analysis:
1- Argument: Prescription drugs in the U.S are too expensive
2- Audience: People who need prescription drugs but can’t afford them.
3- Ethos: a credible picture because it shows that prescription drugs are too expensive with a twenty dollar bill. There are also other bills in the background symbolizing the waste of money on prescription drugs.
4- Pathos: Appeals to emotion in that the picture gives a feeling of sadness. There is a monopoly on the prescription drugs in the U.S and people can’t afford to pay for the drugs they need because they are so expensive. The coloring of the bottle in contrast with the money also appeals to emotion in that it makes the viewer more aware that they are paying too much money for prescription drugs.
5- Logos: Appeals to logic because pharmaceuticals are too expensive and people need to be aware of it. With the pills spilled out over the money makes the viewer understand that they are paying is not worth what they are getting.
6- Effective because it makes pharmaceutical consumers aware that they are paying too much for their drugs.
7- Sufficient? Yes because even though there aren’t any words it still reminds people that something needs to be done about the pharmaceutical monopoly
8- Typical? It is typical because there are many pictures like this one that are displayed in magazines and in the media
9- Accurate? Yes because almost all pharmaceuticals are overpriced.
10- Relevant? Yes because with the never ending invention of new drugs people need to be aware that they are paying too much so they can look for different alternatives.

Paragraph rewrite for paper A:
Original:
In American public schools, parents place a great amount of faith and trust in the school system to nourish their children in both mind and body. This in turn causes the students to also trust in the school. Therefore, by supplying unhealthy food for the students it teaches them bad eating habits which creates a false and misleading perception of what health is. In high school I had a friend who told me she was trying to eat healthy so she pulled out a bagel with strawberry cream cheese. I couldn’t believe she actually thought that she was eating healthy. Such is the case with many students. They get so used to eating fried meat, boxed foods such as potatoes, frozen foods and drinking soft drinks that they begin to think it’s actually healthy. What they don’t realize is that the ingredients included in those foods such as preservatives and other chemicals, can actually cause diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, acne etc... The school lunch programs need to teach by example and modify their programs to where the students can actually experience what healthy food is.

Rewrite:
One might ask what a healthy diet is. The dietary guidelines describe a healthy diet as one that emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, is low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol and includes lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs and nuts. Such a diet is taught to students using the food pyramid as a guideline. They learn the importance of having a balanced diet and they know what kinds of foods wouldn’t fit in that category. However, school cafeterias serve foods that are exactly the opposite of what is taught to the students. In supplying unhealthy food it teaches the students bad eating habits because they trust that whatever the school serves is healthy. Therefore, they develop a misunderstanding of which foods are good for them or not. The students then claim that such foods as bagels with strawberry cream cheese or deep fried chicken are healthy because they are “high in protein”. These are false perceptions. Unlike whole wheat bread, white bread, such as a bagel, has been completely stripped of its nutritional value. Also, any food that is deep fried looses almost 70% of its nutritional value because the extreme heat when frying destroys all the essential fatty acids.

I think there are a lot of people in this world who make life so difficult and stressful for no reason. They run around in a bad mood all the time because they can’t relax. Everything always seems to be going wrong and they simply aren’t happy. Life doesn’t have to be that way. One way to start out is by changing the way you think. It’s really very simple. It’s all a state of mind. If you want to be happy you will be. If you want to be stressed out or angry you will be. Whatever you want to be will be. There’s this really great saying that says “you can if you think you can”. I am a firm believer in this. Most people are in the situation they’re in because that’s where they want to be even if they don’t know it. They don’t have the confidence or discipline to pull themselves out of the hole they’re in so they live in misery. They let failure bring them down. But one must fail in order to succeed so if at first you don’t succeed “try try again”. Eventually things will work out if you don’t give up. The greatest failure of all is when you fail to keep trying.

Technique application

Technique application: Style

Audience: UVSC and BYU students who are desperate.

Raw:
Has it ever occurred to any of you people that there are more important things to occupy your minds with than getting girls numbers? Do you not realize that running around trying to get as many numbers as you can isn’t going to get you a girlfriend? In case you didn’t know, girls can sense right away what your intentions are and if you’re desperate. Everytime I go to any institute dance or party it seems like everybody is on the look out. They can’t just enjoy themselves because they’re so busy trying to be someone they’re not. My advice to you is this: STOP trying so hard. Relax. Let what’s going to happen happen and take it from there. You will be much happier in the long run.
Revised: (change in style)
I have noticed lately that there are many students who concentrate a lot on getting as many girls numbers as they can. This is a mistake because girls can sense what your intentions are and it will scare them off. When you go to a dance or a social gathering try to enjoy yourself and have fun. Don’t try to be someone you’re not. You will notice that more girls will be interested in giving you their number because they can sense your level of maturity and your confidence.

RHETORICAL ANALYSIS

Non-smoking advertisement

Logos: Even though a crush proof cigarette box won’t crush your cigarettes they will send you to your grave in a wooden box.
Ethos: The ad is basically making fun of the cigarette companies who advertise about their new cigarette boxes that will protect cigarettes from crushing. It shows people what cigarettes will do to you with makes the ad more credible. The warning sign on the bottom left hand corner says that the surgeon has determined that cigarette smoking is bad for your health. This makes it credible in that if doctors are saying so then we should believe them.
Pathos: three cigarettes are placed in their casket on the day of their funeral which definitely catches the attention of the viewer. Gives a sense of fear that if you don’t quit smoking you will be the one in the casket. Also shows that hard boxes can’t maintain your health.
Sufficient? It is sufficient enough to catch attention. It makes the viewer have to look at it for a second to get the message and when he does it’s a little comical because the message is completely true.
Typical? Definitely typical to other non-smoking ads but also a little unique which is why it’s an attention grabber.
Accurate? Argument is accurate in that it states that if you smoke you will eventually see your death bed. Everyone knows this is true.
Relevant? Yes because so many people smoke nowadays that it is very relevant to people who need inspiration to quit.

INTRO ATTEMPTING TO USE STYLE

How many people do you know that believe anything is possible? Do YOU believe anything is possible? I once had a friend tell me that he believed anything was possible. To challenge him I asked “can you clean out your ears with your elbows?” He stood there for a second and then shut right up. With one simple question his belief that all things are possible crumbled to ground. What he didn’t realize though is that all things ARE possible. His testimony just wasn’t strong enough. Therefore, the first time he was challenged he gave in. If you want something bad enough you CAN obtain it. It might take months even years but with willpower, discipline, self esteem and a positive attitude ANYTHING is possible. You might ask how it is possible then to clean out your ears with your elbows. If you wanted that bad enough you could cut off your arm, stretch out your ear and then clean it. To make anything possible the first thing to do is begin by controlling your thoughts. These alone are the determining factor to any success in life. It is with the power of the human mind that all things are possible. Today I’m going to talk about how believing in yourself can help you find success in all areas of your life.

Rhetorical Analysis

ART AS ARGUMENT

WATCO advertising an expensive product on people who can’t afford to buy shoes?
CLAIM: Advertising expensive products will have a negative effect on people who live in poverty.
ETHOS: An add can either make or break the impact it has on its viewer. Thisadd is by far one of the most non-credible add I’ve ever seen. The purpose of it is to promote Nike products but in reality it makes the audience think that even those who live in poverty and filth, if they can’t afford to buy Nike, “Just Do It” because peeing on a wall will make them come closer to affording the product.
PATHOS: Very appealing to emotion in that it makes the viewer feel guilty because he’s buying expensive products while there are people like the boy in the picture who are starving and don’t have any clothes to ware. It also makes the viewer feel like he doesn’t want to buy the product any more.
LOGOS: The add makes no sense because who is its audience? Are they trying to appeal to a poverty stricken country or people in the U.S? either way it’s not logical to advertise clothing and have a person on the advertisement basically naked and barefoot living in a dump.

I'm sitting in front of this computer feeling very overwhelmed with school and my huge mid-term tommorrow. I realize that i have only ten minutes to write something for this blog and i am so annoyed that i have to do it. I plan on staying up all night studying and then waking up at 6:00am to continue. It's only Tuesday night but it feels like Friday. It's already been a long week for me. I can't stand to think about what my day tommorow has in store for me. The main reason for my stress is because of my Hobby: Dance. I have a competition this thursday and Friday night in the Mariott center that i've been practicing for since December. I've paid hundreds of dollars for professional lessons. Why? Because i love to dance even though i can't afford it time or money wise. But it's worth it. Also, Because of my crazy practice schedule of 2.5 hours a day i have not had not even a moment to study for my test tomorrow. i looked through my notes and there are at least 100 pages i have to go through tonight. Life is Great!

Different Introductions:
1- Using both sides:
There are many different few points on what eating health is. Some people believe that in order to be completely healthy you need to eat from all the sections of the food pyramid. This includes breads, meats, fruits, vegetables, grains, sugars and so on. Other people believe that eating purely vegetables and occasionally some chicken or turkey is the best way to stay healthy. Still, others are fruitarians who eat purely fruit and nothing else. These people believe that although there are minimal amounts of protein in fruit, what it does contain is of the highest quality of protein. In this way they justify that they are eating healthy. Today I am going to focus on these different view points of eating healthy and talk about the pros and cons of each eating style.

2- Story intro:
As many of you know, I grew up in a small town in Mexico into a family of thirteen children. Education was never considered to be important because people could make money without and education. Therefore, my family strongly opposed my determination to receive an education and ever since junior high I had to fight to graduate from high school. The high school that I attended was a small, rundown, three class room building where no more than 70 students attended. Although I did not receive the education that I was capable of because of the way the program was set up, I was still able to graduate and somehow make my way into Brigham Young University. Today I am going to talk about why receiving an education is important and why I was determined to make something better of my life.

Rhetorical Analysis

1-Argument: the prospect of climate change has the world searching for alternative sources of energy other than fossil fuel.
2-Audience: Americans who are middle class with medium income who care about the problems associated with fossil fuels.
3- Ethos: a very credible article in that the author gives statistics and percentages as well as personal examples. He also involves the audience in his argument making them feel like he knows exactly what they are going through.
Pathos: Appeals to emotion in that it gives the audience the opportunity to think about how they are effecting the environment which makes them feel a sense of guilt as well as urgency like if they need to stop contributing to the problem. Also makes the audience feel afraid that if they don’t do something about it something drastic is going to happen.
Logos: The author has a balanced perspective on the argument where he addresses both sides of the issue. Because of his use of statistics and percentages he makes the reader think logically about the problem. If fossil fuels are causing all these kinds of problems and there is a better alternative, why not change right?
4- The argument in this article is effective because with his use of credibility, emotional appeal and logic the author is able to persuade his audience that alternative sources of energy such as renewable energy might be the better route to take.

The prospect of climate change has the world searching for alternatives to fossil fuel to keep our homes warm, our factories humming, and our cars moving. Energy plays a prominent role in human society. As a result of technological and industrial development, the demand for energy is rapidly increasing. Existing energy sources that are mainly fossil fuel based are leaving enormous amounts of waste and pollution apart from diminishing supply of fuel (Ramachandra). Therefore, the focus is now shifted to other sources of energy. Collectively known as alternative or renewable energy, possible sources include solar, wind, tide, biomass, geothermal, hydropower, and hydrogen. Renewable energy technologies are clean sources of energy that have a much lower environmental impact than other types of energy. Solar energy is one such renewable type. We have used the energy of the sun as far back as 5,000 years ago. People "worshipped" the sun. The influence of the sun appears in religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, the Aztecs of Mexico, the Incas of Peru, and many Native American tribes (solar energy). Today I’m going to talk about the ways solar energy can have a positive effect on the environment as well as how it can lower the costs of energy for consumers.

It’s so weird to think about now but high school was one of the most crazy times of my life. I moved from a little, small three classroom school in Mexico to a school in Minnesota three stories high with 2600 students. I remember my first day of school. I had never felt so scared and lost in my life. The thing that scared me the most was that I was not sure of my abilities to take classes in an American school. I had never been taught in English before and after the first day I realized that I was very far behind the rest of my classmates. For the first two weeks I switched classes like 10 times trying to find the right ones for me. I ended up in classes mostly filled with sophomores although I was a senior which was very humiliating to me but somehow I managed. I felt the same way when I came to BYU. I was so afraid of not being capable of doing well because there were so many things I had never learned. But I did make it through high school and I’m still at BYU on an Academic scholarship which is a testimony to me that even if you’re not the smartest person in the world, if you make a sincere effort to do well you can make it.

Rhetorical Analysis

1- Argument: Solar energy has a positive effect on the environment and although it is expensive to get started it will be much cheaper in the long run.
2- Audience: Families in the United States who are looking to invest in a new home, have a medium income, are interested in saving money and who care about the effects they have on the environment.
3- Ethos: the article was credible because I found it in a journal from one of BYU’s databases. Also, the author gives a lot of evidence to support his claims and he uses a lot of statistics and other types of examples. He is a homebuilder himself and has built thousands of homes in America who survive off pure solar energy.
Pathos: Not very appealing on the emotional aspect but could be a little in that the article makes the reader think about the effects he has on the environment and gives a feeling of guilt because he’s not doing anything to protect it.
Logos: Appealing in the logical sense in that the author provides evidence of all the benefits of using solar energy. If this energy is cheaper, good for the environment and not difficult to attain, who wouldn’t go for this alternative right?
4- This article was very effective because there are many examples he gives about what solar energy can do for humanity and he also shows pictures of the homes he has built that rely solely on this solar energy. The credibility of the article is what made it the most effective.

WATCO utilizing renewable energy resources such as solar panels ON the present economy and living standards?

Audience: adults who have vehicles and homes who consume a lot of energy to keep their lives functioning.

Ethos: credible because it gives the option of something that is “renewable” that many people have heard of. Also credible because there are a lot of problems associated with energy resources and it gives the audience confidence that there are better alternatives.
Pathos: appeal to emotion in that it gives a sense of worry that the resources are depleting faster than they can be replaced. Also gives a sense of “we need to do something about this quick” which makes the audience feel pressure to look for a different way to get energy.
Logos: Appeals to logic in that if there is an energy resource that is “renewable” why wouldn’t anyone want to try it out? Everyone knows that the rising prices for gas and the depleting resources are only going to get worse so why not use a different source of energy?

Sunday, February 24, 2008

Technique application

Enthymeme: Using solar power energy in the home will help decrease the problems with dwindling oil supplies and increased energy costs because it is an environmental friendly, cheap alternative with a never ending source, the sun.
Audience: Families of America
Ethos: A credible statement in that everybody knows the problems associated with the consumption of energy and this makes the reader know that there are alternative forms of energy out there. Also credible because it tells that reader that the author is actually aware of the problems associated with energy and it’s consequences.
Pathos: Appeals to emotion in that it gives a sense of insecurity and urgency. If the prices are going up and supplies are being depleted it makes the reader feel like there are some real problems. It may also make the reader feel like he needs to do something about the way he consumes energy.
Logos: A logical statement in that if there is a problem with energy sources then obviously there has to be an alternative choice. Solar energy is this source and why wouldn’t anybody want to use it? After the panels and equipment are purchased, energy in the home will basically be free. Also, if oil prices are souring while it’s supply is getting hard to come by it’s only logical that a better and less expensive alternative is needed.

SOLAR ENERGY

Argument: The use of solar panels can do a lot for the good of mankind b/c of the decreasing levels and rising prices of fossil fuels.
Audience: Directed toward teachers who are teaching students about solar energy and to those who have an interest in learning about it.
Ethos: A credible article because the author talks about the positive and negative effects of solar energy and he gives examples of his personal experience with it. Also, he gives statistics and evidence that solar energy is actually an option the world has as a renewable source of energy.
Pathos: Appeals to emotion in that he talks about the depleting fossil fuels and what the future holds for man kind. Gives the reader a sense of worry or fear that we need to do something about this problem. Also gives a sense of urgency like it needs to be done now or we’re in big trouble.
Logos: There is a balanced perspective in the article in that the author brings up both sides of his argument; the pro’s and con’s of solar energy. With the examples he gives about what solar energy can do it only sounds logical that it’s a good option for energy.

It is sometimes hard to discipline yourself to do things that your body doesn’t want to do. For example, working out. Each year my New Years resolution is to start working out every day, five times a week. But, as time goes by it gets harder and harder to go to the gym. Why? Because there are so many other things that are more important and that take less effort. In order to get the results we want it is important that we practice self control, will power and discipline. These three elements are vital to succeeding at whatever it is that you want to do in your life. I have a roommate who is way overweight and who simply doesn’t care about her health. She watches TV and eats fast food every day without fail and she uses her medical condition as an excuse that she can’t go on a diet. It’s so hard to set back and watch her wasting her life away but at the same time it’s inspiring because it’s a perfect example of what I don’t want to be. If we learn from the mistakes of other people we will find much success in our lives.

Sometimes, in this life, it’s so hard to take risks because it’s in human nature to stay within our comfort zone. We come to a point where things get so comfortable the way they are that it’s hard to get out and think outside the box. Why? Because we don’t like to feel uncomfortable or insecure. I’ve always struggled with taking risks because I’m so afraid of rejection. But this weekend I learned a big lesson. I learned that it is only by taking a risk and putting myself out there that will teach me some valuable lessons in this life. It feels so good to know that I actually did something that I’ve been wanting and needing to do for the longest time but haven’t because I’ve been too scared. There are many people who never fulfill their human potential because their lives remain overwhelmed with feelings of inferiority. I don’t want to be one of those people. Rhetorical Analysis

Article: Unhappy meals
Ethos: This article has a strong appeal to emotion on that it talks a lot about the different types of food that students are eating around the country and it kind of gives you as sense of guilt because a lot of the food mentioned that is unhealthy most people eat it including me. It also talks about the various sicknesses caused by these foods and the problems that are happening in American today because of the way people eat. It gives a sense of worry. Like: Is that happening to me because I eat those foods?
Pathos: It is a credible article because it has statistics on the National School Lunch Program and on the eating habits in various states. It also talks about percentages and gives quotations of what profesional nutritionistas have said.
Logos: This article appeals very much to Logos in that it gives details about why the food that is served in public school cafeterias is unhealthy and reasons to change. It makes it only obvious that their needs to be something done because the food being served causes things such as diabetes and heart disease.

WATCO public school lunch programs On the health of students and their perception of what health is.

Audience: School administrators.
Authority-they can actually do something about the lunch program.
Want their students to be healthy and successful.
Aware of the obesity problems in America
Logical- if they see what the effects are they will do something about it.
Understand what health is but aren’t sure how to change the school lunch program without going over the budget.

Positive things about serving unhealthy food in schools
Cheap- save money
Kids will actually eat the food
The food is easy to prepare and lasts longer
Sells a lot more
Negative things about serving unhealthy food in schools
Very unhealthy
Adds to the problems of obesity in the U.S
Students develop bad eating habits
Students develop a wrong perception of what health is
Causes students to not perform as well in school b/c chances of getting sick are increased.
Argument/ Enthymeme:
The public school lunch programs increase the health risks of students and gives them a misleading perception on what health is because school cafeterias serve foods that lead to obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

WATCO providing healthy food in schools on students understanding the importance of eating healthy?
Claim: Providing healthy food in schools will help students have a better understanding of the importance of eating healthy because they will have more energy, feel good and be more successful in their studies.
Audience: The school administration, the people in charge of the lunch programs such as the government, and also the parents of students who actually care about what their children eat and are willing to do something about it.
Ethos: This is a credible claim because it involves the actual student and it let’s the reader know that there is a problem that needs to be fixed.
Pathos: This claim appeals more to logos but there is a small emotional appeal in that if the students understood what healthy food really is they would feel better which in turn would make them happier and less stressed out.
Logos: the claim is logical in that it only makes sense that if students understood the concept of healthy food and what it can do for them then they would be more conscious about what they ate. Also, they would be more successful in school because they wouldn’t get sick as often and they would feel more energetic.

It is interesting to know that there are so many people who are quite negative about BYU and its standards. I’ve heard many people talk about how they can’t stand the honor code and they hate the culture etc… What I don’t understand is why they heck are they at BYU if they don’t like it? It’s so frustrating because I know so many people who would love to come to BYU but they just don’t have the opportunity. Why can’t people be more grateful that they actually have the chance to get an education in a good school where there are a few honest people who, if you needed something, would help you in a flash? It’s so weird to me. I grew up in Mexico in one of the most ridiculous education systems in the world. I didn’t learn one thing during high school. The teachers never showed up and when they did we just had class for like 1 hour and then we would spend the rest of the time doing nothing. I literally thought it was impossible to come to BYU because I didn’t think I was capable of taking classes in such an awesome university. But I actually did make it in and I’m so thankful to be here. If people only knew what they had they wouldn’t be so negative about being at BYU.

Rhetorical Analysis

Rhetorical Analysis:
I analyzed the sales pitch of a dish network consultant who wanted me to sign up with dish network.
WATCO signing a contract with dish network ON receiving the quality service they promise their customers.
Audience: People who watch TV a lot and who are not satisfied with the TV service they have right now.
Claim: Signing a contract with dish network will not guarantee the quality service they promise their customers because the motives of most of their salesmen are to make money and they will do and say anything they can to get you to buy from them.
-Ethos: The salesman was not credible because he told me that I would receive all kinds of benefits like free service for the first month and free movie channels for three months. When I asked him what the catch was he kind of mumbled out that they needed a SS#, CC# so they could do a credit check and there was a $50.00 sign up fee.
-Pathos: His sales pitch did appeal to emotion a lot in that he tried to make me realize that watching quality TV with all the good channels was what was going to make me happy. He also made me feel like dish network was the only Television service out there that was actually worth my time.
-Logos: His sales pitch was logical in the beginning. Everything he said made sense. I would be getting a lot more channels for less than the price that I’m paying for cable right now. Who wouldn’t want more for less right? But then after I learned about the catches, his reasoning wasn’t logical to me.
Sufficient: His evidence was not sufficient because he didn’t tell me about all the taxes that are included in the monthly bill.
Typical: His argument was typical to what other salesman do to persuade people. “you get more for the same price of what you’re paying now”
Accurate: His argument wasn’t accurate in that he didn’t exactly say what the catches where until I asked him about them and he also didn’t tell me about the taxes that are included in the monthly bill.
Relevant: His argument was relevant to the topic in that he was trying to sell me his product and he talked about all the benefits that I would receive upon buying it.

When you're sitting home alone on a Friday night wondering what everyone else is doing and why it is that you aren't with them that is when you start to wonder if you're a nerd or just really antisocial. there is one solution. Get up, turn the TV off, call a friend up and get the heck out of the house. It's simply not right for a college student to sit home every weekend just because they don't get asked out. It is unbeleivable the amount of people who live their lives like this. They just sit home weekend in and weekend out waisting their lives away waiting for their prince charming to pop out of the TV and rescue them. And they wonder why they haven't had a date in a whole year, why they're not married and if they ever will be. Well, Hello!!, Do you not understand that you actually have to get out there and make yourself known if you want a boyfriend? Also, you can't expect to find anyone if you don't do your hair, put a little bit of makeup on and get dressed. Guys aren't attracted to girls if it looks like they're too lazy to even try to look presentable. There are way too many girls at BYU who just wake up, put their shoes on and walk out the door to school. Such is the case with my roommates. They simply don't care about the way they look. Every sunday i have to hear them complain about how they don't want to put make up on, they don't feel like getting dressed and on and on. And then they constantly complain about how they never go on dates. The reason why i'm writing this is because i don't have the guts to tell them this upfront even though i'm dying to do so.

WATCO creating art for the world on the acceptance of other cultures?

Claim: Creating art for the world creates a way for other people to understand different cultures b/c art is the one thing that people can relate to.

Audience: People from ages 20- 35 from around the world who are artistically inclined and who have an understanding of the meaning of art. Particularly those who care about art from different cultures.
-Logos: There are people from all over the world who create art every day. Everyone has some kind of connection with art and everybody knows or has heard about many of the famous artists.
-Ethos: It is credible because the painting is advertising art to the world. The fact that the artist included different continents in his work makes him credible because it shows that he actually wants people to benefit from his work as well as the work of others. It’s like he’s trying to unite the different countries in one thing, art.
-Pathos: Appeals to a sense of need for art. It’s like people should be aware that there is art out there and that it needs to be noticed. Gives a sense of curiosity, what kind of art is out there? I want to see it.
-Sufficient: yes because it gets the viewer to actually think about the need for art
-Typical: very typical because every artist in the world understands the need for art and why it is important. That is why they create it.
-Accurate: it’s an honest message. People need art because it allows them to understand different cultures and different people.
-Relevant: Very relevant because nowadays art is very valuable and it is what has allowed people to see past just what seems to be and look deep into what the artist is really going through.

Funnel Intro.

When cafeterias were first introduced in public schools they were very successful in promoting healthy eating. At that time people seemed to have somewhat of an understanding of what “healthy” actually meant. The students were served things such as raw vegetables, whole wheat bread, natural juice etc… As time passed by these foods were replaced by processed foods, deep fried foods, items with sugar and juice from concentrate. People seem to have also become unaware of how unhealthy most of the food is at school. When I was in my senior year of high school I sat by a girl in the cafeteria who told me she was trying to eat healthy so she was staying away from the food in the cafeteria. I looked at her tray and noticed that she was eating a bagel with strawberry cream cheese. I couldn’t believe that she actually thought she was eating healthy. Promoting healthy food at school will encourage students to eat healthier and also make them more aware of which foods are actually healthy and which ones are not.

Story intro:

While growing up, basketball played a major role in my life. I played all throughout high school until my senior year when I moved from Mexico to Minnesota. I was the “new kid” in school who was a senior and didn’t have any friends. I wanted more than ever to try out for the basket ball team. So I began to practice with the team before the try outs. During this time I was treated like a freshman girl who didn’t know what she was doing. All the girls on the team new each other and they couldn’t handle the thought of a new girl coming in to take their place. I was always so insecure around them that I couldn’t do my best when practicing because I was so worried about what they would say. One day I thought the coach could give me a little encouragement so I went to talk to him. I told him that I really wanted to be on the team but I felt like everybody couldn’t stand me and they didn’t treat me right. He looked at me while he pointed at some trophies on the wall and said in an almost screaming voice “Do you see those? Do you think you’re capable of winning one of those? Because that is what our goal is this year and so far I haven’t seen any effort on your part.” With that being said I quietly turned around, walked out of the gym and never went back. I’ve regretted it ever since then because I knew I was good enough to be on the team. I knew I was capable of winning but I let another person keep me from what I wanted most at the time. Eleanor Roosevelt said “nobody can make you feel inferior without your consent”. Most people never fulfill their human potential and remain overwhelmed with feelings of inferiority because they care too much about what other people think.

Although getting married and starting a family is important, I think some people take it to the extremes. I’m a 22 year old college student and I guess since I’m still not married “the train has passed me by.” It’s a never ending story with my family. They’re all so worried about me because my entire generation is married now and I’m not. Even in school when people find out my age they’re like “it’s time for you to get married now.” It’ is the most annoying thing I’ve ever had to deal with. Why is it that people can’t just leave me alone and let me get married when I feel like it’s right instead of pressuring me? Do they want me to marry a looser? When I marry it will be for love and because It’s what I want, not because I’m pressured. The train has not passed me by, It’s barely leaving the station.

Rhetorical Analisis

1- Argument/ Enthymeme
Eating Quaker oatmeal increases the chances of maintaining inner/outer beauty because grains give you the vitamins you need to stay healthy and energetic.

2- Audience- article is targeted to older more conservative people who care about their health and their looks.
3- Ethos- The add is credible because the article mentions the names of the two older women which gives the reader the feeling that these women are not models but actual run of the mill people who have tried the oatmeal and actually know what it tastes like. The Quaker logo is also very famous and so the add is automatically a little more credible.
Pathos- Strongly appeals to emotion in that the women are smiling, the interesting use of color is also very appealing in that they create a way to call the attention of the passing reader while drawing him to the faces of the healthy looking women. It also makes the reader think of the health benefits such as losing weight and lowering your cholesterol.
Logos- there is not very much appeal to logic in that the strength of the article lies in the emotional appeal.
Sufficient- The use of words, color, organization and the way they make the women look like they come from a real world situation is sufficient evidence that this product may actually do its job.
Typical- The add is typical to what others would believe in that everybody knows that the consumption of grains is very healthy. They just need to be reminded once in a while to do it.
Accurate- The claim of the add is accurate because eating oatmeal really will make you stay younger looking and healthy.
Relevant- The way they include a hair salon atmosphere with two old ladies eating a bowl of oatmeal is relevant to the topic because it shows that the oatmeal can give you inner beauty ( it makes you happy and healthy) and outer beauty ( it makes you young looking).

4- The ad is effective in that it gives a sincere and honest message about oatmeal and what it can do for a person. It also has an attention getter and it’s a little humorous which gives the reader a reason to read it.

Although I knew the next day was sunday and I shouldn't be up late, I gave into my two girlfriends requests and headed to Park City. When we got there the streets were packed with people and we couldn't find a parking spot if our lives depended on it. We finally ended up paying $20.00 to park in some rundown parking garage. I'm not sure why we wore dresses but I think it's because we wanted to look "classy" since we might be seeing movie stars and because we knew that most people had money. We couldn't show up looking like a bunch of starving college students. It was the biggest mistake of our lives. We ended up walking up and down the streets in weather that felt like below zero and waiting in huge lines just to get a cup of hot chocolate. But it was worth it because we were surrounded by gorgeous guys and we got to see Paris Hilton (the celebrity with no talent). We almost made it inside of the night club "Harios" to party with all the stars while 50 cent performed on stage. But, to our dismay, the bouncers held us back because the club was filled passed the capacity limit. I didn't end up getting home till four in the morning and I had to be up by nine. Life is great!!

1- WATCO- watching too much television- on –self motivation?
Audience: Women in their late 20’s and early 30’s, who stay at home on weekends, never get dressed up or wear make-up and who wonder why they are single.
Claim: Watching too much television shows a lack of self motivation

2- WATCO- Eating unhealthy – on – self esteem?
Audience: adults who want to loose weight and who are self conscious about it but who continue indulging in tons of fattening foods and then regret it.
Claim: Eating unhealthy cause’s people have low self esteem

3- WATCO- washing your hair daily – on – having shiny, healthy looking hair?
Audience: young adults in their early 20’s who feel like they absolutely have to wash their hair everyday, who care about how they look and want their hair to look healthy.
Claim: Washing your hair daily decreases the chances of having shiny, healthy looking hair because shampoo dries it out and washes out all the necessary oils that make it grow thicker.

4- WATCO- buying expensive clothes – on – appearing to be “high maintenance”?
Audience: Young girls who care about how they look, want to dress nice but aren’t sure how without buying expensive clothes and have money but they don’t like to brag about it.
Claim: Buying expensive clothes enhances the possibilities of appearing to be “high maintenance” because wearing jeans that cost $250.00 makes people think you’re rich and spoiled rotten.

Rhetorical Analysis

1- The argument of the article is that Lubriderm lotion is the best and therefore we should buy it.
2- The article is targeted towards people who have dry or sensitive skin, between the ages of 15-35, care about their looks and their skin, want to have moist, sexy legs, are interested in being healthy.
3- Ethos: The credibility of the article is that they use words such as “advanced therapy” “enriched” which makes the reader think she is getting high quality lotion that is above the normal. “Therapy” also has the connotation of some type of ongoing treatment with the end result being better than when you started. They also give an example of alligator type skin which let’s the reader know that the author of the article has also had extremely dry skin.
Pathos: The emotions portrayed in the article are things like if you have Lubriderm lotion you will feel better about yourself and be more accepted. They have a beautiful model sitting on a couch with her long, shiny, moisturized legs showing which makes the reader also feel like she too can look like that.
Logos: Lubriderm is the best lotion because it is not the same as other lotions, it’s more unique. Everybody experiences dry skin but this lotion can change that.
4- The article is effective to younger adults in that they have nicer bodies and think that there actually is a chance of their skin looking that good. However, for the older adults they have come to realize that their skin will never look like that.
